Active Optical Cables
Active optical cables are plug-compatible, direct replacement for passive or active copper cables. A miniature optical engine is located inside the plug at either end and performs the electrical to optical signal conversion for transmission over a thin optical fiber.
Active Optical Cable feature much longer reach (up to 100m), smaller cable diameter (3mm), tighter bend radiuses, and much lighter weight than their copper counter parts. In addition, the cable power consumption (600mW typ. per end) is lower than comparable active copper cables.
QSFP 40Gb Active Optical Cables
QSFP active optical cables are standard compliant cables for Infiniband QDR and Ethernet 40 GbE (40 Gigabit Ethernet) applications.
PCIe x4 Active Optical Cables
PCIe active optical cables are used for external PCI Express Gen2 cabling. They extend the reach of PCIe Gen2 cabling up to 300m. They are backwards compatible with Gen1 and will support Gen3 rates in the future.
